Morning: Into the White Desert (10:30 AM departure)
Your adventure begins when our experienced driver meets you at your hotel to share important trip details and safety instructions. We depart at 10:30 AM, setting off for our first fascinating stop.
Train Cemetery – We start with a journey back in time at this haunting collection of abandoned locomotives. These rusting giants tell the story of Bolivia’s railway glory days and make for incredible photography opportunities. Climb aboard, explore the oxidized metal sculptures, and imagine the stories these trains could tell.
Colchani Village – Next, we immerse ourselves in local culture at this small community on the edge of the salt flats. Here you’ll witness the traditional, manual process of salt extraction that has been practiced for generations. Watch skilled artisans demonstrate their craft and browse unique salt handicrafts – perfect souvenirs made entirely from salt crystals. You’ll learn about the incredible thickness of the salt crust and gain insight into how this natural resource sustains local families.
The First Salt Hotel – We make a quick but memorable stop at the pioneering hotel constructed entirely from salt blocks – walls, furniture, sculptures, and all! It’s a testament to human creativity and the versatility of this remarkable landscape.
Incahuasi Island (Fish Island) – This is the crown jewel of the tour. Rising from the vast white emptiness like a mirage, this rocky island is home to ancient cacti that have been growing for hundreds of years – some reaching over 10 meters tall! As you hike to the summit, each step reveals more of the salt flat’s incredible scale. From the top, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of pure white stretching to every horizon – a view that will take your breath away and fill your camera with once-in-a-lifetime shots.
Lunch on the Salt Flats – Imagine dining in the middle of one of earth’s most extraordinary landscapes, surrounded by nothing but endless white. We’ll set up a delicious lunch right on the salt flats, where you can relax, refuel, and soak in the otherworldly atmosphere.
Creative Photography Session – After lunch, we take advantage of the salt flats’ unique optical illusions. The perfectly flat, white surface creates ideal conditions for perspective-bending photos. Our driver knows all the best tricks and will help you create fun, creative images that play with scale and distance.
Sunset Spectacle – As we make our way back toward Uyuni, we time our return perfectly to catch the magical sunset. The salt flats become a canvas for nature’s most beautiful light show. Watch as the white expanse transforms into a palette of warm colors – soft pinks, brilliant oranges, deep purples, and golden yellows reflecting off the crystalline ground. It’s a moment of pure magic that perfectly caps off your day.
Return to Uyuni – We arrive back in town around 5:00 PM, giving you the rest of the evening to relax and reflect on your incredible day.
